Andrew KerrAndrew Kerr
Andrew Kerr was born in Plymouth, Devon, England and graduated
from the London School of Economics with a bachelor’s degree in
Government and politics. He is a resident of Olympia, Washington and
his wife Stephanie, a former America’s cup sailor with the America 3
team, is a visiting professor at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma,
WA, they have two children- Liam and Kellen.
A full time coach, seminar speaker & North U instructor, Andrew has
given seminars all over the world for a wide variety of groups, classes
and yacht clubs.
He has been a head coach at the Boston Sailing Center, an assistant
Director at Steve Colgate’s offshore sailing school in Tortola, BVI and
an original member of the coaching staff of the J World sailing school
in San Diego when it started in the winter of 1988.
He has also been a member of the coaching staff’s at the J World
sailing school’s in Annapolis, Newport (RI) and Key West where he was
also an instructor trainer at those locations.
Teams and individuals that he has coached have gone on to win the Farr
40 Nationals, J80 North American’s, Block Island race week, Key West
race week, Chicago to Mackinac race, LMSRF boat of the year, Mumm 30
North American’s, J105 president’s trophy (southern circuit
championships) and numerous NOOD regatta’s - to name a few.
Some of his accomplishments include winning the J24 Nationals 6 times,
the J24 North American’s, the Santana 20 Nationals 6 times, the J27
North American’s, US Sailing’s National Offshore championships , the
Holder 20 Nationals, Block Island race week, the SORC & Key West
race week multiple times.
He has also placed 3rd, 4th and 5th at the J24 World Championships and 5th at the J22 World Championships.
In addition he has placed 2nd through 5th (in many cases multiple
times) in the National or North American Championships of the J24, J22,
J105 ( Coach), Benetau 40.7 ( Coach), J35, Santana 20, Ensign, Sonar,
Mumm 30, J120, J80, Melges 24 (Gold Cup) and S27.9 classes.
He has been a part of teams that won the J80 US Midwinter’s, the J27 US
Midwinter’s, the Melges 24 US Midwinter championship circuit as well as
4 J35 Great Lakes championships.
Over the span of sailing World magazines NOOD regatta’s – 1989 to
present - he has been a part of teams that have won 22 NOOD events in a
wide variety of one design classes and locations.
Andrew also enjoys writing coaching articles and is a contributor to
Sailing World and a number of one design class websites and
newsletter’s. He is a member of the Southwestern Yacht club in San
Diego, CA and the South Sound Sailing Society in Olympia.
